Quick answer
We count school days as the weekdays from the first day of a term to the last day, then take away statewide public holidays that fall on those weekdays. Weekends are never counted. Staff-only days are not counted because schools set those themselves, so your school may have a few more days off.
How do we count a school day?
A school day is a Monday to Friday between the first and last day of a term, with both of those days included. The term tracker uses the same rule to show how many school days are left.
What do we take away?
We remove statewide public holidays that fall on a weekday inside a term, such as Easter Monday or Labour Day. Local holidays, show days and regional events are not removed because they only apply to some towns. Check the public holidays by state for the statewide list.
What is left out?
Staff-only days, pupil-free days and school development days are not counted. Schools decide these, and they differ between schools in the same state. Your school will show the exact days in its own newsletter or calendar.
Why might my school count differently?
Independent and Catholic schools can run their own calendars. A school can also swap a day for a different one. Use the school terms guide to see how terms and breaks fit together, and the official calendar from your school for anything exact.
